Definition

Root planing and dental curettage are nonsurgical procedures designed to disinfect periodontal tissues by removing bacteria and calculus from periodontal pockets and along the roots of the teeth. Performed in addition to scaling, root planing allows, once completed, the re-adhesion of the gum to the tooth surface.

Advantages

  • Minimally invasive method with proven effectiveness;

Risks and consequences of not treating

Processing steps and times

  • Performed under local anesthesia, root planing and curettage require 2 to 4 sessions, depending on the severity of the problem and the number of teeth affected;
  • Bacteria and tartar that have accumulated along the roots of the teeth are removed with curettes, precision instruments used to remove diseased tissue, or with an ultrasound machine. A curettage is then performed to thoroughly scrape the tissue inside the periodontal pockets;
  • To complete the disinfection and decontamination of the periodontal pocket, the surfacing and curettage can be followed by an irrigation of the periodontal pockets with an antiseptic, an antibiotic or by using a laser.

Maintenance

  • Despite the proven effectiveness of root planing, it is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene habits, including brushing 2-3 times a day and using dental floss and interdental brushes;
  • A cleaning (prophylaxis), including scaling, performed twice a year or as recommended by the dentist, is also essential to ensure the good health of the gums and underlying bone.
