Sealants for pits and fissures

The sealing of pits and fissures, which are small furrows and cracks found on the surface of molars and premolars, consists of a preventive treatment that controls the appearance of dental caries. Indeed, food debris is likely to become lodged in these small spaces, leading to a proliferation of bacteria responsible for the formation of cavities. When applied to the surface of high-risk teeth, the sealant acts as a protective varnish.

The sealant fills in the pits and cracks on the tooth surface and eliminates these “traps” by closing them tightly so that the toothbrush can effectively scrub spaces that were once impossible to clean.

The sealant is mainly used on:

• A healthy tooth with deep grooves;
• The occlusal surface of the molars;
• The lingual groove of the upper molars;
• The buccal groove of the lower molars.

• People with a predisposition to cavities.

• Significant reduction in the incidence of cavities;
• Keep healthy and intact teeth as long as possible;
• Rapid treatment that does not require anesthesia and does not cause pain.

• Possibility of disbonding despite their lifespan of several years.

• Appearance of dental caries;
• Use of anaesthesia to remove the cavity;
• Use of a permanent amalgam or composite filling.

• Cleaning the tooth;
• Application of an acid solution allowing the sealant to be anchored in the enamel;
• Application of the resin (sealant);
• Exposure of the sealant to blue light to harden it;
• Occlusion adjustment.

• Varies according to the number of teeth to be sealed (from 1 to 8 molars).

• Maintain good oral hygiene practices, including brushing teeth 2 to 3 times a day, flossing, interdental brushes and mouthwash as needed;
• Return to your dentist for examination and cleaning every six months or as recommended by your oral health professional.
